Level 70 starter guide |
|
The quest for ever better gear and more challenging encounters (in rl speak - more game content targeted towards our obssesive-compulsive sides)
Broken down: Gold, Gear, Raiding for even better gear
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Gold: Daily quests and mote farming
Mote Farming:
Primal Air: higher-level (66-67) vortexes in Nagrand (cyclone-looking things)
Primal Earth: you can get lots of primal earth from mining - I get a primal earth about every fourth mining attempt
Primal Fire: ditto the mining - As well, in Blade Edge Mountains the SW forge camp has lvl 70 mobs (pure fire things)
Primal Water: the water elementals in Nagrand drop these pretty consistently - especially those deep in the ravines that run in the middle of the zone - As well, the water mobs in Skettis
Primal Life: the best source of these is herbalism - i used to get a primal life about every third of fourth herb pick, but they also drop from the mobs in the northeast section of Zangar
Primal Mana: single best source for these is in Netherstorm from the mana eel-things - all around Area 52 and the other main city areas
Primal Shadow: nearly all of the voidwalkers drop these, but Nagrand is the best place for them - around the large rock formating in the western half of Nagrand, the 66-678 mobs
Daily Quests:
Pre-requisite: flying mount riding skill
Start with the Skyguard:
Talk to Yuula, who is located near the flight master in Shattrath City. She will send you out to slay Gordunni Ogres in the Barrier Hills, which are only a few seconds by flying mount from Shattrath City. Once you've slain the requisite number of ogres, Yuula will send you to Skyguard camp of Blackwind Landing.
The quests:
Fires of Skettis: 11g
Escape from Skettis: 9g + 2 pots (health or mana - your choice - not as good as supers)
Then the Ogri'la:
Ogri'la is situated on a plateau near the western edge of the Blade's Edge Mountains, west of Sylvanaar, between Forge Camp Terror and Forge Camp Wrath. It is only accessible by a flying mount or flight form. (Players can also access the plateau after having honored reputation with Sha'tari Skyguard via the transportation between Terokkar Forest and Blade's Edge, but players still need to be able to fly to access the Skyguard camp near Skettis.)
Speak with Mog'dorg the Wizened. He stands atop the tower on the east side of the Circle of Blood in the Blade's Edge Mountains.
The quests:
The Relic's Emanation: 9g
Wrangle Some Aether Rays: 9g
Bombing Run: 11g
Gear: Quest chains, heroic instances, and crafting
Quest chains:
There are a number of quest chains that start of soloable and usually cumulate in a 5 man group take-down of a 72 elite or two.

Motes FTW!!! |

I'll try to add some of my limited knowledge about motes while I have a few minutes...
Motes are really pretty vital to everyone, even if you're not a crafter. If nothing else, most motes have serious monetary value, especially given the fact that they are usually dropped by mobs you could kill for other purposes anyway. If you're a crafter, they become even more important, as many of the "end-game" recipes require insane amounts of motes that are cost-prohibitive to buy through the AH (unless you need primal earth, which isn't worth the cost of a postage stamp).
10 motes creates a primal, and the number of primals for some items is, as I said, quite insane. For my sword, I need 20 primal shadow and 20 primal mana. Do the math - 20 primal mana is 200 motes of mana, and motes of mana in the best zone i've found have about a 35% drop rate - so for the mana motes alone, I need at least 500 kills of mana-dropping mobs. So it behoves you, when possible, to group mote/primal farming with questing, building up xp, whatever, since you might as well get something else for all that killing.
There are a number of primals out there - where I know of consistent farming locations/methods, I've indicated them here (remember, you'll farm the motes and make them into primals):
Primal Air: the vortexes in Nagrand (cyclone-looking things) drop these pretty regularly - my experience is about 20% from the higher-level (66-67) mobs
Primal Earth: you can get lots of primal earth from mining - I get a primal earth about every fourth mining attempt
Primal Fire: ditto the mining - I get these about every other fourth time (usually a mote per two strikes in hgher zones)
Primal Water: the water elementals in Nagrand drop these pretty consistently - especially those deep in the ravines that run in the middle of the zone
Primal Life: the best source of these is herbalism - i used to get a primal life about every third of fourth herb pick, but they also drop from the mobs in the northeast section of Zangar
Primal Mana: single best source for these is in Netherstorm from the mana eel-things - all around Area 52 and the other main city areas - the 69-70 mobs in particular drop at a really good rate - close to 35% in my experience
Primal Shadow: nearly all of the voidwalkers drop these, but Nagrand is the best place for them - around the large rock formating in the western half of Nagrand, the 66-678 mobs drop about 25% of the time.
My experience thus far suggests that Nagrand delivers the most generic bank for your buck for mote farming, particularly solo farming, as the mobs are never higher than 67, generally aren't tightly-packed, and drop a variety of motes depending on where you are. Of course, specific farming requires specific zones.
There are two other primals to be aware of:
Primal Might (cannot be farmed - must be created by Alchemist via transmute - need one each of five different primals (earth, water, air, fire, and mana) to create might - only 1 transmute per day per alchemist)
Primal Nether (drops from 69+ bosses - low drop rate, but 100% in heroic instances)
When I was an alchemist, I made primal mights for folks - thankless job - lots of people don't want to pay a tip, and if you happen to make two or more mights from one set of mats (increasingly likely if you specialize in transmutation), they expect you to hand over the duplicates. 24hr cooldown on the process, so only one mote per day for any one alchemist.
I have no primal nethers - they are BoP, and only drop from instance bosses, mostly in heroics right now (although the patch notes indicate that in 2.3, their drop rate will be positively nerfed in non-heroic instances.
Here's a good starting point to understanding the individual motes/primals:

I suspect other folks have found good alternate sites for farming... |

Just a quick bump to point out that with 2.4 live, all of the upper level guilds are in BT and need to fully equip their raids with high end shadow resist gear. On out server, that translates into about 300-400 raiders needing about 80-100 primal shadows each. That is why primal shadows are now selling for about 25 gold each (used to be around 5). Time to start farming

I believe primal nethers are no longer BoP and can be bought in the AH, but I'm not sure how much they go for.
